Peoria, Arizona was first established in the 1880’s when William Murphy had a vision of fertile farm lands fed by Salt River water from the Arizona Canal. Once the canal was completed, he went East to interest people in settling in this new community. Mr. Murphy was successful in catching people’s attention! Citizens from Peoria, Illinois purchased over 5,000 acres of land in this new district.

Four families from Peoria, Illinois were among the first to move to Arizona to occupy and work their newly purchased land in the new town of… Peoria Arizona!Residences in the new community sprang up, and a school and Post Office were established by 1889. More people followed the original families and Peoria continued to grow as a farming community. The farmlands were fertile and the people made a good living. Peoria was incorporated in 1954, with boundaries covering one square mile of land.

The small-town atmosphere and warm climate of Peoria continued to attract lots of people, and still does today. Currently, Peoria is the place that over 120,000 people call home, and it now covers 162 square miles. Peoria is Arizona’s 9th largest by population, and 4th largest city in terms of incorporated areas. Peoria, Arizona has grown from a tiny farming community into a flourishing city with many great things to offer it’s residents.. .

The Peoria Sports Complex is the entertainment and economic catalyst for the City of Peoria, Arizona. The complex was the first Major League Baseball spring training and player development facility in the country that is shared by two teams. It was built in 1994 and is home to the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. The complex is made up of the main stadium and 12 practice fields. It’s unique setup is ideal for baseball tournaments from youth leagues to college championships.

 

Challenger Space Center in Peoria ArizonaThe Challenger Space Center is another one of Peoria’s major attractions. The space center was created to inspire and educate people of all ages about the wonders and mysteries of space, science and the universe we live in. The space center features the Giant StarLab Planetarium which seats about 75. You can learn all about the moon and stars while inside the planetarium or take a telescoping class so you can learn how to stargaze at home.

The City of Peoria, Arizona is also known as the “gateway” to the Lake Pleasant Regional Park which is one of the largest lakes in the Phoenix area. The park offers several activities including wildlife viewing, fishing from boat or shoreline, boating, jet-skiing, hiking, swimming and picnicking.
